Coaching and consulting are entrenched in the corporate landscape.
While coaches and consultants have traditionally assisted business clients over the last several decades, the 21st Century has witnessed the rapid spread of these professions into every avenue of corporate, government, and private life. Considering the varieties of background and qualification, the levels of experience, records of achievement, limits in knowledge, skill, and proficiency, and depth of developmental histories, I must ask “What compels clients to select their particular coaches and consultants?”
Our experience tells us that a great number of those claiming to be coaches and consultants have fallen into these professions by default.
On closer examination we found that they lacked even the most rudimentary training or education required for success in such demanding life altering roles. Indeed, a great number of consulting firms and corporate organizations had appointed individuals to these vital positions even though these individuals had not been adequately prepared for the responsibilities characteristic of coaching and consulting. Beyond this, we further discovered that a large number of people had begun their careers as coaches and consultants merely by fiat without completing any specific training or development regimens or attaining the requisite exposure, experience, or record of success that may enable one to make the leap from technical expert to professional coach or consultant.
Systems Management Institute believes that this is not the best situation for anybody.
The status quo is ineffective for the clients who depend on the unprepared coaches and consultants they hire and unfair to the coaches and consultants who must suffer through this situation.
